Excerpt

The first two bullets were fired too quickly and aimed more on instinct and a vague sense of movement.  Old westerns of the main street quick-draw gun fight were laughable.  It was incredibly rare for someone to be able to hit anything but dirt with a shot from the hip.

Del’s shots didn’t fare much better.

They impacted the drywall that divided the bedroom from the bathroom.  She could hear them pop and shatter wall tiles in the bathroom.  She hoped, distantly, that the walls stopped the slugs, or slowed them to the point that no innocents were hurt.

She couldn’t even recall what ammunition she was using.

Vaguely, she thought there was a grunt of pain.  But the rogue didn’t slow down.

She fired two more rounds and hoped they found their mark.  The rogue got hit twice in the chest but kept coming right at her.  This body in motion was going to stay in motion regardless of what ammunition she used.  She made a choice only a hair’s-breadth before one was made for her, and tried to step aside.  The rogue traveled past, and there was a brief tug before her shoulder was jerked violently.  Her body spun to follow. Fabric tore and and pain lanced into her arm.

Her shoulder bag was caught by the launched rogue.

It jerked Del from her feet and toward the balcony.

Del had a vague impression of a feminine form before she and the rogue crashed into, and through, the sliding-glass door.  The air became filled with sparkling razorblades.  Stings and slices opened up all over her exposed face, arms, and hands.

A hundred tiny cuts that oozed blood.

Good News for Tuesday - Tears of Heaven Available a Day Early

You heard right!  Tears of Heaven will be available tomorrow, Wednesday, December 4th, ONE DAY EARLY through Wild Child Publishing!

"A second sail moved swiftly upon the waves . . . They were doomed."
The pirates were everywhere.  They grew from the very sea and rose from the spray and the mist.  The fight was hot and thick, even as the ocean shot up waves, and rain sliced down around the combatants.  Blood and water mixed so that the planks became treacherous ground.  Not a few sailors found the deck too slick to stand upon, and slid over the railing and into their doom.

Dami smashed his short sword into a Cilician pirate’s face and spun to face a new opponent.  He bled from a half-dozen small cuts.  Nothing serious, and only a few that would require needle and thread.  But they gave fire and pain to him and sucked at his strength like a leech.

His newest opponent was felled by a well-timed blow from a cudgel Dami captured sometime during the fight.  The man fairly tossed it to him as Dami cut a deep gash into his neck and throat.  He thanked Poseidon, Ares and any other gods for the luck he’d been granted this day.

For a moment, he was given a respite from the fight, and he took stock of his men.  It looked as if they would hold their own, and the deck would be swept clean.  Already a few had managed to cut the grapples that kept Wavedancer a prisoner of the pirates’ faster, sleeker ship.  Dami turned his head to see if he couldn’t find Aeolus or Paetur in this mess, and said another small prayer for his two friends and his other men.

Then he cursed.

A second sail moved swiftly upon the waves.  Its cut and sails matched it to the Cilician ship that held Wavedancer and his crew.

They were doomed.

Final Countdown: Four Days

". . . she didn't remember thumbing the safety off . . ."
She didn’t notice Ahadiel until she was stopped at a red light.

“You may put away your weapon,” Ahadiel said.  His gaze was focused on hers, and the same uncomfortable shiver trickled through her spine as she looked into his pupil-less depths.  Deep, dark blue that swirled the longer she stared.

Ahadiel was near perfect.  He was dark-skinned, a color that always reminded her of a Hershey’s chocolate bar.  His was well-formed and looked as if he worked out every day, though Del knew he didn’t.  Even had he needed to, his duties would have prevented it.  He was half a head taller and a good hundred or more pounds heavier.  His head looked close-shaved, but he had no need for a razor, a haircut, or even a shower and deodorant.  He looked exactly the same today as he had two hundred years ago, and exactly as he would two hundred from now.

Right down to the half-smile which always seemed to signify that he was in on a joke the rest of the world would never know.

Weapon? she thought.  Her mind locked down on the thought, and she looked down at her left hand.

She was obviously more exhausted than she realized.

The SIG was cradled in her left hand and cupped by her lap.  It was aimed directly at Ahadiel’s nose, her finger curled around the trigger.  She didn’t remember thumbing the safety off, but as she changed the focus of her eyes she could see that it was.  Slowly, calmly, she thumbed the safety back on and slid the SIG back under her right arm.

“I wish you would just call,” she said.  The rush of exertion overcame her, and she slumped back into her seat.  She needed sleep and nothing more strenuous than lifting a glass of absinthe.  In her current state, her right arm wouldn’t be able to manage even that.

“That . . . technology,” Ahadiel said the word with as much scorn as she’d ever heard from him, “does not work for the divine.”

“Exactly,” Del replied.
